Seventeen-year-old Alena Scott is tired of pretending to be something she’s not. As an outlawed vampire-witch hybrid, she’s forced to abide by the oppressive secrecy imposed by her Vampire Chancellor mother. But she’ll have to ignore the rules when she comes face-to-face with a handsome, full-grown version of her childhood imaginary friend.
Shocked that he recognizes her as his own pretend play pal, the two embark on a quest to solve the mystery of their fantasized companionship. And as they unravel their entwined destinies, Alena realizes she holds the key to a curse which could free them all—or condemn witchkind to eternal suffering.

Kingdom of Embers has struck me speechless. The book was amazing from the start. I am at a complete loss now that it is over. Breathless may explain my true feeling at this moment.
Alena is a strong character. From the beginning you can tell although she has been kept in the dark she craves more. She struggles, but she tries to find ways to overcome. Hunter is a frickin’ awesome addition to her. He takes everything in stride and much like Alena he has yet to stop looking for information. I am absolutely taken with these characters.
Tricia Copeland certainly knows how to capture her readers. Each character their own personality and purpose. They draw the reader in. The emotion is truly palpable. I have read a few books narrated by Amy Deuchler and have loved the narration each time. Although I could tell each character apart by their attitude, I feel that Alena and her mother were almost given she same tone unlike the differentiations with other characters. It didn’t hinder the experience, but it did stick out to me and distract a bit.
Overall the entire production was great. The recording flowed smoothly. The book is amazing. I am so glad I have experienced this first part of the adventure Alena has. I cannot wait to read more. This book was one I couldn’t stop listening to. I am up way past my bedtime listening and am sure it will be the same for the second installment.
